The Perfect Frame: Why Curtain Bangs & Long Layers Are the Cut Everyone Wa

Every so often a haircut comes along that simply refuses to go out of style. Curtain bangs with long layers have been the most requested cut in our chairs for a few years running, and heading into fall, more of you are asking for them than ever.

At The Light Room Salon, this cut is a bit of a specialty of ours. We actually host classes teaching the technique to other stylists, so if you've been thinking about finally taking the plunge, here's everything we tell our own guests (and our students) about the cut everyone wants.

1. Why It Works So Well

Curtain bangs and long layers are made for each other. The bangs part softly at the center, sweep away from your eyes, and taper at the edges until they melt into the layers around your face. Those layers carry the movement through the rest of your hair, adding body and swing while you keep your length. Nothing about it looks overly "done," and that's the whole point.

2. Flattering on (Almost) Everyone

There's a reason this fringe has outlasted every other bang trend: it looks good on nearly every face. The soft, swept shape follows your features instead of cutting straight across them. Longer, cheekbone-grazing bangs slim a rounder face. Shorter ones show off an oval one. Feathered edges soften a strong jaw. At your consultation, we'll fine-tune the length and where the part falls. Small adjustments, big difference.

3. The Bang for the Commitment-Shy

Scared of bangs? You're not alone, and this is the one to start with. Curtain bangs style in about two minutes with a round brush, or a velcro roller while you do your makeup. On lazy days, tuck them behind your ears or pin them back and no one's the wiser. And when you're over them, they grow out into pretty face-framing pieces instead of that dreaded awkward stage. As far as bangs go, this is the closest thing to commitment-free.

4. Low Maintenance, High Payoff

Long layers are cut to air-dry well and hold a wave on their own. This is a wash-and-go haircut at heart. A trim every eight weeks or so keeps the bangs sitting where they should, and a little finishing cream (we love Davines This Is A Medium Hold Finishing Cream) gives you that soft, lived-in polish without any stiffness.

5. Pair It With Fall Color

This cut also happens to be the perfect canvas for the season's color. Picture curtain bangs framing a glossy auburn, or long layers painted in warm copper balayage. Book your cut and color together and you'll walk out feeling like a whole new person in a single visit.

Framed in the Best Light

A great haircut should make you look like yourself on a really good day, without a fight every morning. That's exactly what this one does, and it's why we don't see it going anywhere anytime soon.
